Naval Sea Systems Command awarded Fluor Marine Propulsion [FLR] a $1.33 billion modification on Sept. 30 to a previous contract to exercise an option for more Naval Nuclear Propulsion work at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.
In 2018, Fluor took over the work to support nuclear warship contracts from previous incumbent Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp. (Defense Daily, July 13, 2018).
The overall contract covers management and operations at the Department of Energy’s Naval Nuclear Laboratory, which is at three sites: the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories in West Mifflin, Pa.; the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site in West Milton, N.Y.; and the Naval Reactors Facility near Idaho Falls, Idaho
This work is devoted to developing new nuclear propulsion systems for the Navy’s submarines and aircraft carriers as well as training sailors to operate the systems.
In 2020, Fluor was awarded another $1.776 billion modification for further work under the larger contract (Defense Daily, March 13, 2020).
The contract award noted this latest modification is specifically exercising a fiscal year 2023 option for Fluor’s contract work. The work will be split among Schenectady, N.Y. (52 percent); Pittsburgh, Pa. (40 percent), and Idaho Falls, Idaho (eight percent).
$3.6 million in fiscal year 2021 and 2022 funding was obligated at the time of award, with $3.5 million set to expire at the end of this fiscal year.
