After 9/11 the United States government rushed to deploy enough explosives detection and explosive trace detection systems at the nation’s airports serving commercial aviation, enabling 100 percent screening of checked bags for explosives. That job was completed nearly five years ago. Since then some trace machines have been replaced in favor of smaller explosives detection systems that can fit more easily in smaller airports. However, the time is approaching for many of the original EDS machines to begin being upgraded and replaced.

Despite the tremendous improvements that have been made in screening checked bags, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the most part has only just begun to improve the way they screen passengers and their carry-on luggage at checkpoints. The agency continues to test various personnel screening and improved X-Ray systems, but hasn’t settled on a clear path for deploying these technologies.

TSA has also begun to strengthen airport security by initiating a list of qualified biometric systems and sensors that could be integrated into existing employee access control systems to limit who can enter certain areas of airports. Whether airports decide to upgrade their access control systems with biometrics is another question.

This webinar examines TSA’s plans for upgrading aviation security and the systems and technologies the agency may acquire to accomplish its goals.

This timely and lively webinar will cover the following:

  • What is the checkpoint of the future? What new technologies will likely be implemented in the next 5 and 10 years?
  • What is TSA’s near-term plans for the airport checkpoints? How will the needed upgrade to EDS machines effect airport security?
  • What new technologies and systems will the TSA implement to improve checked baggage screening? What is the current outlook?
  • How will sensor integration and improved situational awareness by TSA staff improve airport security? What are the pros and cons of the new systems and procedures?
  • What future concepts and technologies are in the works for airport security? Is there more than biometrics and standoff detection?
