The U.S. Army has ordered Saab AB‘s shoulder-launched AT4CS RS (reduced sensitivity) anti-armor weapon systems, the company said Tuesday.

The AT4CS RS is a disposable, preloaded weapon developed with a unique shaped-charge warhead that delivers behind-armor-effects inside a target, Saab said. With the new warhead, the system also has improved insensitive munition (IM) characteristics.

This AT4 variant has an effective range of 20-300 meters, is about 1 meter long, and has armor penetration of greater than 350 mm.

Saab highlighted the AT4 is not limited to countering tanks and heavy combat vehicles, but also building and fortification threats. It can also protect fixed installations, supply points, and other vital assets, the company said.

This is another great milestone for Saab and the AT4 system. This new order demonstrates the continued belief by the customer in the capabilities and versatility of our product, as well as its future potential. Together with the major December 2014 order from the French armed forces, this order emphasises that Saab is the leading supplier in the shoulder-launched product segment,” Görgen Johansson, head of the Saab Dynamics business area, said in a statement.

New variants of the AT4 were introduced in 2014: the AT4CS ER (extended range) and AT4CS HE (high explosive). They both provide multi-purpose, direct fire support with confined space capabilities, Saab said.

The AT4 product range also includes the AT4 High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT), confined space (CS), and anti-structure tandem (CS AST)variants.

Deliveries of the AT4CS RS are set to take place in 2016.
