ATK [ATK] April 8 said it received a firm fixed price $7 million contract from the South Korean army for the purchase, installation and integration of its AAR-47 Missile Warning System with Hostile Fire Indication (HFI and Laser Warning) onto AH-1S helicopters.
The upgrade will also include the installation of the AN/ALE-47 countermeasure dispensing system.

The AAR-47 Missile Warning System is a combat-proven electronic warfare system designed to protect helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from surface-to-air threats, the company said in a statement.
“We are pleased that we were selected for this program and we look forward to a long lasting relationship with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration,” said Mike Kahn, president of ATK Defense Group. “This contract supports our focus on providing high-value to our customers, allowing ATK to have continued expansion of its aircraft survivability equipment across key international platforms.”
“Aircraft face many hostile threats in combat and ATK warning systems provide the ability to detect and react,” said Bill Kasting, vice president and general manager of ATK Defense Group’s Defense Electronic Systems division. “ATK’s goal is to provide our customers with the accuracy and reliability they expect while enhancing the overall effectiveness of their flight-platform missions.”
The AAR-47 is the only system in use today that integrates missile, laser and hostile fire threat warning into a single system, the company statement said.
With ATK’s unique HFI capability added to the AAR-47, military aircrews flying helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft can detect a wider range of threats to their aircraft, including smaller-caliber weapon fire and rocket propelled grenades, and quickly respond with countermeasures. ATK is the only company to deliver this key capability as part of a proven missile warning system.
The AAR-47 missile warning system is installed on more than 3,200 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft and is flown by the United States and its allies in more than 16 countries.
The Symetrics AN/ALE-47 CMDS is an Electronic Warfare self-protection suite that provides combat aircrews with enhanced survivability against surface-to-air and air-to-air missile threats in all environments, by dispensing chaff or flares, and is a complement to ATK’s AAR-47.
