The Air Force yesterday announced that it has awarded Boeing [BA] a $90 million contract for lot 4 production of the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB).
The company will supply 2,082 GBU-39s, along with 337 BRU-61A carriages, 742 single weapons containers and technical support, the Air Force said. Of the total number of bombs, 687 are being purchased through the use of FY ’07 Global War on Terror supplemental funding, the service noted.
The GBU-39, known formally as the SDB Increment I weapon system, is a 250-pound-class, all-weather, satellite-guidance-aided bomb designed to strike fixed and stationary targets from standoff ranges. The Air Force has been using these bombs in Iraq for about the past year.
