The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate has awarded start-up AppCensus $198,600 to develop testing and validation services for COVID-19 digital contact tracing applications. Under the Silicon Valley Innovation Program phase one award, the California-based company will also provide a free public microsite with results of the app testing. DHS is seeking a robust app testing ecosystem to ensure that digital contact tracing apps are used as intended while protecting individuals’ sensitive and personal information.

says it has installed its Quick Personnel Security 201 millimeter wave-based body scanner at Kerry Airport in Farranfore, Ireland. R&S says the QPS201 features enhanced second-generation algorithms for more sensitive threat detection while minimizing false alarms and reducing processing time.

Customs and Border Protection has re-opened the comment period for a proposed rule concerning collection of facial images and other biometrics from aliens entering and departing the U.S. The comment period will close on March 12. CBP says language in the current regulations only authorize certain foreign nationals to provide biometrics upon exiting the U.S. under pilot programs at land ports and up to 15 airports and seaports. The Department of Homeland Security is proposing to amend the regulations to remove the references to pilot programs and the port limitation. DHS is also proposing to amend the regulations so that all aliens will be required to be photographed upon entry or departure.
