*L-1 Identity Solutions [ID] has received $9.6 million in orders under its existing agreements with U.S. military customers for HIIDE and PIER mobile biometric devices for deployment in areas of conflict. L-1 says that two-thirds of the HIIDE order and all of the PIERs are expected to ship before the end of September and that the remaining HIIDEs will be shipped by the end of 2009. Over 10,000 HIIDE and 4,500 PIER devices have been fielded.
*The Department of Homeland Security is providing $42 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to construct inline explosive detection systems at Sacramento International Airport, Honolulu International Airport, and Kahului Airport. Sacramento will receive $11 million, Honolulu $24 million and Kahului $7 million.
*The Transportation Security Administration and Continental Airlines have expanded their Paperless Boarding Pass pilot program to San Diego (Calif.) International Airport, making it the 22 second airport to undertake the project. The program allows passengers to receive boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs for scanning by TSA security officers at the checkpoint, eliminating the need for a paper boarding pass.
*TSA also says it will test OSI Systems [OSIS] Secure 1000 backscatter-based whole body imaging system at Greater Rochester (N.Y.) International Airport as part of a new pilot program to examine how well the backscatter technology works in a primary screening function. The agency will also test L-3 Communications [LLL] ProVision millimeter wave whole body imaging system at Bob Hope Airport (Calif.). Both pilot tests will last 60 days.
*Innovative Emergency Management, Inc. received a one-year, $990,873 contract from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency for a capabilities study to help predict improvised explosive devices. The Louisiana-base firm will develop and deliver a modeling, simulation, visualization and training capability.
