Britain’s Royal Navy implemented two of Saab’s combat management systems in its latest information warfare exercise as the country’s Ministry of Defense looks employ a greater use of open architecture on its ships.

Saab’s 9LV Combat Management System (CMS) and TactiCall Integrated Communication System (ICS) were used in the Royal Navy’s second Information Warrior ‘18 event to test new warfare capabilities.

“IW18 has more than simply benchmarked current capability to allow for further testing, it has demonstrated available technology to progress the Royal Navy’s Information Warfare vision, through both the development of its own representative open architecture and close participation from industry,” Royal Navy Commodore Ian Annett said in a statement. “It is encouraging to see major defense contributors such as Saab willing to demonstrate how their CMS and Tactical ICS are able to operate on a government-owned open architecture”

The IW18 exercise was held at the Royal Marine Barracks Stonehouse and British defense company QinetiQ’s technology headquarters and featured both Royal Navy and industry partners testing the latest information warfare developments.

Saab’s 9LV CMS and Tactical ICS systems both meet the Ministry of Defence’s goal for modular open systems to increase mission capabilities and move toward more upgradeable technology.

“9LV was also the only CMS participating in IW18 with the open interface standards needed to handle the simulated environment, with the modular and scalable design meaning hardware and software can be adapted to specific requirements,” Saab officials wrote in a statement.

The company’s 9LV is already used by the Australian, Canadian and Swedish Navies, according to Saab.
