Cogent Systems [COGT] last week introduced its first multimodal biometric collection and identification device, Fusion, which is aimed at the military and law enforcement markets. Cogent has been mentioning for a while that it was developing a multimodal biometric capability–finger, face and iris–and in August disclosed that the Defense Department had begun placing orders for the new device after testing it (TR2, Aug. 20). The company says it has sold 74 to Army Special Operations Forces at Fort Bragg, N.C., and another 67 to a military intelligence agency. The Navy SEALs are also interested in the device, an official with the company that helped Cogent develop Fusion, tells TR2. Fusion features a one inch by one inch 500 dpi optical fingerprint scanner, the ability to capture and match 10 flat fingerprints, iris (2 megapixels) and facial image (1.3 megapixels) capture, integrated wireless communications with embedded GPS that automatically tags files, a 3.5 inches color liquid crystal display with an optional touchscreen, all in a 1.2 pound package. The device is 8.74 inches long and 4.61 inches wide at its widest portion. Fusion will compete with L-1 Identity Solutions’ [ID] HIIDE device and a new multimodal biometric device being developed by Cross Match Technologies.
