DTRA Awards 908 Devices $12M to Advanced Chem Detection Technology

908 Devices has received a potential $11.5 million contract from the Defense Department’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to integrate gas chromatography with the company’s core high-pressure mass spectrometry (HPMS) technology to create a compact, lightweight chemical detection device, giving warfighters broader and more advanced analysis capabilities downrange.  The award is the largest contract to date for 908 devices, which introduced its flagship product last year, the M908, a 4.4-pound device that gives users the capability to detect and identify a range of threats in seconds with high confidence and low false alarm rates. “Today’s responders are faced with a wider array of threats than ever before, and as the mission expands so must the toolkit,” says Kevin Knopp, president and CEO of 908 Devices. “We believe the development of new product variants based on our core HPMS technology platform will play a key role in the future of threat detection and strengthen mission support.” The company says that under this new program it will subcontract with the Univ. of North Carolina and other commercial entities and national laboratories.

Army Taps Smiths Detection, Partner 908, for Next-Gen Chem Detection Award

The Army has awarded Smiths Detection as contract to move into the next phase of technology development and testing for the Next Generation Chemical Detection (NGCD) Platform/Site Air Monitor Variant. Smiths said the company and its subcontractor 908 Devices builds on its successful chemical detection program with the Department of Defense. The NGCD program is designed to develop and procure detectors for chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and non-traditional agents in the air and on surfaces in all states of matter. The value of the award wasn’t disclosed. Separately, 908 Devices says the NGCD program is expected to be one of the largest CBRN procurement contracts in the world. 908 Devices says it is providing its patented High-Pressure Mass Spectrometry technology for the partnership under the Option 1 award from the Joint Project Manager for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Contamination Avoidance. “Our technology platform detects a broad range of priority threats in the presence of complex backgrounds and is suited to a variety of product form factors to meet specific mission sets,” says Kevin Knopp, president and CEO of 908 Devices. Under the original contract, the companies provided a breadboard system for testing and under the new award they will deliver a brass board system for further testing.
