The Defense Department last month awarded a three-year, $617 million joint enterprise licensing agreement to Insight Enterprises, one of the largest global large account resellers of Microsoft [MSFT] software, a deal that covers about 75 percent of DoD personnel and provides the department with more than $100 million a year in cost avoidance.

The agreement expands access to Microsoft solutions for DoD users. The Army, Air Force and Defense Information Systems Agency can begin using the newest versions of Microsoft products immediately.

“This agreement enables us to provide the best technology tools to an incredibly broad range of servicemen and servicewomen across the DoD, and we are looking forward to implementing to support their mission goals,” Tim Solms, general manager for Microsoft’s Department of Defense Business, said in a statement.

The Army estimates that the new licensing agreement will provide it with more than $70 million annually in cost avoidance and the Air Force sees about $50 million a year in cost avoidance. DISA estimates that it will save at least 10 percent throughout the life of the agreement.
