Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) on Monday said it has acquired Samtan Engineering Corp., which provides metalworking services for Navy and Coast Guard vessels, and aerospace and commercial customers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

FMD said the acquisition expands its turnkey maritime solutions portfolio with the metal working supplier. Samtan, which was founded in 1962 and is based in Massachusetts, performs small and large-scale production for metal stamping, deep drawing, marine banded and tapped cable hangers, and main wireway, pipe clamps, and pipe hangers.

Samtan also provides services that include shearing, punching, forming, machining, welding, and assembly. The company’s primary business is selling products to shipyards for new Navy ships and it provides aftermarket services.

“Our acquisition of Samtan Engineering allows Fairbanks Morse Defense to continue delivering value far beyond the cost of our services through the seamless integration of metal-stamped products and machine shop services,” George Whittier, FMD’s CEO, said in a statement. “Samtan has a long track record of delivering superior customer service and high-quality products to the U.S. Navy, especially for submarine programs.”

Samtan said that as part of FMD the company can expand its product sales to new Navy ship classes and other vessels and give its existing customers access to FMD’s solutions and “global network of highly trained technicians, which will increase operational availability.”

Samtan has about 40 employees. Dana Miele is Samtan’s new general manager. Jon Petromelis, Samtan’s former president, is serving as an independent consultant to assist the transition.

No financial advisers were used in the transaction.
