The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) awarded General Dynamics’ [GD] National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) a $148 million contract for the FY ’18 modernization of the USS Cowpens (CG-62).
The firm-fixed price contract covers a “long-term” modernization period availability for the Ticonderoga-class cruiser that includes modernization, maintenance, and repairs.
The contract includes options that, if exercised, would raise the total value to $155 million.
The contract was competitively procured in a full and open competition and competed on a West Coast-wide basis, without limiting performance to the ship’s homeport of San Diego, Calif. However, the San Diego-based GD-NASSCO was the only offer received.
NASSCO will provide the facilities and human resources needed to complete, coordinate, and integrate multiple areas of Cowpens maintenance, modernization, and repair.
Work will occur in San Diego and is expected to be finished by Dec. 2019. The full funding is obligated at award time and is coming from FY ’18 Navy operations and maintenance and other procurement accounts.
