General Dynamics’ [GD] C4 Systems, yesterday announced its Massachusetts-based operations have achieved the Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 5 rating–the highest rating attainable.
The rating encompasses evaluation of the company’s operations in Taunton and Needham, Mass. This is the second CMMI Level 5-rating achieved by the New England-area operations.
“The CMMI Level 5 achievements signify the company’s extremely well-developed and integrated processes in systems, software and hardware engineering and supply-chain management,” Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems, said in a statement. “It speaks to our government and defense customers and to industry about the General Dynamics value proposition–higher quality, lower overall risk and better cost and schedule controls.”
The Software Engineering Institute is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the Defense Department and operated by Carnegie Mellon University. The CMMI provides a maturity framework for improving processes that organizations use to develop and deliver products for customers.
The rating for General Dynamics was the result of a comprehensive appraisal conducted by ProcessWorks Inc., an external appraisal organization. The appraisal was conducted according to the formal Class A Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) and encompassed 22 process areas and 437 practices. The company’s Massachusetts operations received the first CMMI Level 5 rating in June 2005.
