Rear Adm. William Hilarides has been nominated as the next commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, the Pentagon said last week.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the nomination, which is accompanied by a third star, of Hilardes last week to replace Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy. The Senate must approve the nomination.

Naval Sea Systems Command, or NAVSEA, oversees the engineering, procurement and maintenance of ships, submarines and combat systems.

Hilarides is currently special assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations for information dominance in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

McCoy plans to retire and, pending Senate confirmation, the command transition is anticipated to take place this summer, said Chris Johnson, a NAVSEA spokesman.
