ICx Technologies [ICXT] has introduced the radHUNTER radiation detector, a 7.6-pound handheld gamma radionuclide identification device (RIID) designed for secondary inspections of tractor-trailer trucks, vehicles and cargo containers. The device can be used to adjudicate alarms from pager-style radiation detectors used for interdiction. The radHUNTER is the second radiation detector ICx has released in the past month. Earlier in November ICx introduced the Raider, a 1.4-pound belt worn device for interdiction applications (TR2, Nov. 12). The radHUNTER was developed over eight years, in part through funding from the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office Human Portable Radiation Detection System program, and features miniature, digital signal processing electronics, utilizing power conservation and advancements in the scintillation detector and the radionuclide template matching identification algorithm. ICx says that radHUNTER is designed to correct variations in normal operation conditions that can affect performance. The device is designed for first responders, customs agents and specialized security forces. It can label isotopes as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material, industrial, medical or special nuclear material and has corresponding alarms that indicate the severity of the threat in just seconds. The price for a radHUNTER unit is $20,000 to $23,000 depending on options. ICx’ Raider device sells for $20,000 apiece and is more powerful than the Interceptor pager-style device it makes for Thermo Fisher Scientific [TMO] to resell.
