iRobot [IRBT] picked up a $4 million order from the Navy for an undisclosed number of 110 FirstLook robots, the company said on Wednesday.
The 110 FirstLook is a rugged five-pound vehicle capable of entering dangerous environments to conduct route clearance, collecting information, and manipulating hazardous materials, thus keeping operators protected. It can integrate third party sensors and thermal imagers, enabling HazMat and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) missions, and can be equipped with a claw-like tool allowing it to pick up and carry objects.
The company will complete deliveries of the bot by February 2016.
“iRobot is pleased to provide these state-of-the-art robots to the U.S. Navy as they will help to address a wide variety of missions,” said Tom Frost, senior vice president and general manager of the company’s defense & security business unit. “FirstLook is light enough and rugged enough to be thrown through a window or down a flight of stairs, and its capabilities are expandable with the addition of different payloads. We believe FirstLook is the most capable robot in its weight class.”
The company has delivered more than 5,000 robots to military and law enforcement customers around the globe.
