High winds at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California postponed the Nov. 15 launch of the first Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1), according to NASA and United Launch Alliance (ULA).
A new launch date has not yet been announced. “The team is working to establish a new launch opportunity,” ULA tweeted.
The delay is the mission’s third this month. Earlier delays were caused by a launch safety alarm, the presence of boats near the launch site and a faulty battery in the launch vehicle booster (Defense Daily, Nov. 14).
The weather satellite, which Ball Aerospace built for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA, is slated to lift off on a ULA Delta 2 rocket. ULA is a joint venture between Boeing [BA] and Lockheed Martin [LMT].
