The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) this week awarded separate contracts worth a combined $1.1 billion to L-3 Communications [LLL] and Morpho Detection, Inc. (MDI), to supply medium-speed explosives detection systems (EDS) to the nation’s airports during the next five years.
L-3’s Security & Detection Systems division received slightly more than half of the potential contract, $549.6 million, with MDI’s award worth up to $528.2 million. MDI is a unit of France’s Safran Group.
L-3 and MDI are the only two companies that have been supplying medium-speed EDS to TSA. A third company, SAIC [SAI], supplies reduced-size EDS to the agency.
TSA has not awarded task orders to either L-3 or MDI under the new medium-speed EDS award.
