The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has certified L-3 Communications [LLL] eXaminer SX explosives detection system (EDS) for use in U.S. airports. The system is smaller and lighter than the current series of eXaminer EDS and is suitable for airport lobbies and can be integrated with baggage handling systems. L-3 says the system has a throughput of 360 bags per hour in line and 300 bags per hour in a stand alone configuration. The company also says the SX clears 98 percent of bags while in motion. L-3 says the SX can be networked with any eXaminer 3DX systems. The company also says the SX generates high-resolution 3D color images in real time, including 360-degree rotational views of entire bags as well as the individual threat objects. The smaller footprint of the SX means it is suitable for airports that don’t have heavy passenger traffic or the space needed for a bigger EDS system.
