Applied Defense Solutions (ADS), which is based in Maryland, is expected to contribute about $15 million in sales to L3 in 2018 and about $50 million in 2019. L3 said the deal will be neutral to earnings this year and accretive in 2019.

ADS’ capabilities are in agile software development, mission planning, data processing and analytics, data collection and management, and modeling simulation and analysis.

L3 said its new L3 ADS business unit will provide customers in the intelligence community, the Defense Department, NASA and others with space systems mission planning, space exploration and satellite operations, protection and resiliency.

“L3 ADS strengthens our business in the mission-critical aspects of space situational awareness, particularly in the area of multi-domain command and control, which is a key element of our country national security strategy objectives,” Christopher Kubasik, chairman, president and CEO of L3, said in a statement. “This acquisition, along with our internal research and development investments, demonstrates our growth strategy of investing in capabilities, accelerating innovation and delivering integrated solutions for our customers.”

In the space area, L3 already provides capabilities in avionics systems. The company is the exclusive provider to United Launch Alliance for avionics and related services for the Vulcan Centaur rocket system.

L3 ADS also has offices in Northern Virginia and Colorado Springs, Colo. The business unit, which is now part of L3’s Sensor Systems segment, has about 100 employees.

The McLean Group served as ADS’ financial adviser on the deal.
