The LRLAPs are designed to fire from the Navy’s newest Zumwalt-class (DDG-1000) destroyers in support of shore-based Marines.
The National Warheads Energetics Consortium consists of more than 170 companies and academic institutions and works closely with the Pentagon Ordnance Technology Consortium. The NWEC award Lockheed Martin an $18-million contract.
LRLAP is a 155-mm projectile fired from the Advanced Gun System for the DDG 1000 destroyers. It is designed for precise engagement to minimize collateral damage.
The contract includes developing production line tooling, test equipment and manufacturing process plans for initial production of the advanced projectile. The guidance and control unit will be assembled at Lockheed Martin’s Ocala, Fla., facility. Final assembly of LRLAP will be performed at the company’s Troy, Ala., facility.
