The Missile Defense Agency on Thursday awarded Lockheed Martin [LMT] a contract worth up to $4 billion to develop, deliver, and support updates for the command and control, battle management and communications (C2BMC) system.

C2BMC is the integrating element of the ballistic missile defense system, which means it pulls together sensors for the interceptors, providing situational awareness and battle management. It has been operational since 2004 and Lockheed Martin has been the incumbent manager of the system.

The announcement divided work into Task Order One, covering enterprise management and enterprise service for $490 million; Task Order Two for C2BMC mission software development for $34 million; and Task Order Three for product execution, for $322 million.

The announcement covers an ordering period running from May 2024 to April 2029, with an option to extend the work through April 2034.
