Nammo has developed and demonstrated a 40mmx53 HV AirBurst round for the Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL) Mk19 system, a candidate for the Anti-Defilade ammunition requirement from the U.S. Army, the company said on Wednesday.

The 40mm AirBurst round was recently demonstrated at the NSA range at Ft. Benning, Ga. In attendance were representatives of the Army, Marine Corps, and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). The demonstration included a series of firings in single shot and burst mode with targets 350 meters and 500 meters away.

The 40mmx53 HV AirBurst round is a smart ammunition, modular, has extreme precision, and contains a self-destruct function, the company said in a statement. The modularity “will also enable the U.S. Army to rework the M430 A1 inventory.”

The company said that these specifications provide a capability to defeat targets in an urban warfare scenario. The AirBurst round can be used by operators that already have experience with AGL systems like the MK19 and H&K GMG.

“We wanted our customers to get a hands-on experience and to know what to expect from our products, the easy integration with Fire Control Systems, the minimal weapon modification, and how they perform in a tactical situation. I am pleased to say that our products performed as expected and we are very satisfied with the results. The response from the audience was extremely positive, confirming the demonstration to be a great success,” Jan Hasslid, Marketing & Sales Director at Nammo, said.
