General Dynamics [GD] Electric Boat won a $36.5 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to develop advanced submarine technologies for current and future undersea platforms, the company said on Friday.
“Under the terms of the modification, Electric Boat will perform advanced submarine research and development studies in support of a wide range of technology areas including manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials,” the company said in a statement.
Electric Boat is also to conduct additional R&D in areas like affordability, manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling, and safety.
The contract additionally supports near-term Virginia-class technology insertion, future submarine concepts, and core technologies.
The contract was first awarded in November 2010 and has a potential value of almost $711 million over five years if all options are exercised and funded.
