The Navy fired two of the SM-6s from the USS Chancellorsville (CG-62), a guided missile Ticonderoga-class cruiser, and both successfully hit test drones simulating cruise missiles.
The SM-6 is designed to provide the Navy with extended range aerial protection against aircraft and missiles.
Jim Normoyle, Raytheon Missile Systems’ SM-6 program director, said the company is gearing up for combat systems qualification trials in November.
Raytheon delivered the first SM-6 in February.
