The Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman [NOC] a contract to provide Advanced Threat Warning (ATW) sensors as an upgrade for large aircraft infrared countermeasures, the company said yesterday.

Northrop Grumman will deliver 24 ATW sensors and five processors for integration onboard the CH-53 Sea Stallions under the sole source contract. The contract’s value was not provided.

Northrop Grumman’s infrared countermeasure system is either installed or scheduled to be installed on several hundred military Pentagon aircraft on 50 different types of large fixed-wing transports and rotary-wing platforms.

The system is designed to automatically detect a missile launch, assess the threat and use a high-intensity laser-based system to defeat the missile.
