The Pentagon’s Defense Security and Cooperation Agency on Wednesday notified Congress of a potential $1.2 billion foreign military sale (FMS) to Poland for tethered aerostat systems equipped with radar and other sensors for airspace and surface reconnaissance, the State Department said.

Poland’s request includes airspace and surface radar reconnaissance systems, airborne early warning radars with identification friend or foe capability, electronic sensor systems, mooring systems with powered tethers that include fiber optics, ground control systems, and other related equipment and support.

RTX [RTX], TCOM, L.P., ELTA North America, and QinetiQ’s Avantus Federal are the principal contractors on the potential FMS deal.

The State Department said that Poland will use the aerostat-based sensor system for early warning against regional threats and further its assistance to NATO.

Poland is in the throes of heavily arming itself following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In the past 12 to 15 months, the U.S. State Department has announced tens of billions of dollars in defense deals for Poland to include precision missiles and launchers, attack helicopters, integrated battle command systems, advanced radar, and main battle tanks.
