ASM International’s Heat Treating Society hosted “Heat Treat 2019” Conference and Exposition in Detroit
Heat Treat 2019, the biennial conference and expo organized by the ASM Heat Treating Society, took place from October 15-17 at the TCF Convention Center in Detroit. Co-located with Motion + Power Technology Expo 2019, the conference and expo attracted more than 2,000 attendees and featured an exciting mix of new technology, exhibits, technical programming and networking events geared toward the heat treating industry.

MATERIALS PARK, Ohio, Oct. 31, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Heat Treat 2019, the biennial conference and expo organized by the ASM Heat Treating Society, took place from October 15-17 at the TCF Convention Center in Detroit. Co-located with Motion + Power Technology Expo 2019, the conference and expo attracted more than 2,000 attendees and featured an exciting mix of new technology, exhibits, technical programming and networking events geared toward the heat treating industry.
During Heat Treat 2019, Fluxtrol Inc. (Auburn Hills, Mich.) sponsored a competition-based award and recognition program for Post-Doctoral Researchers, Lecturers and Professors (Academic Researchers) seeking to encourage increased participation of Academic Institutions in ASM Heat Treating Society (HTS), and to provide attractive offers and opportunities in the worldwide Materials and Thermal Processing communities. To be eligible, potential recipients were required to be an Academic Researcher who is currently conducting research and/or overseeing the research of students pursuing an undergraduate or post graduate degree at a University, Institute or College (University) in the field of thermal processing.
The winner received $2500 that can be used to support research activity at the Academic Researcher’s Institution. The award can be used for travel expenses (researcher or student), conference fees, scholarship money, or laboratory equipment. The winner of this year’s award was Dr. Richard D. Sisson, Jr., FASM, Director of Manufacturing and Materials Engineering, George F. Fuller Professor Mechanical Engineering, Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Fluxtrol also sponsored a young innovative scientists/professionals competition-based award and recognition program, seeking to encourage participation of young scientists in ASM HTS, and to provide attractive offers and opportunities in the worldwide Thermal Processing community. This was a two-step competition encompassing a poster competition, as well as an oral presentation competition for semi-finalists.
To be eligible, students were required to be currently pursuing an undergraduate or post graduate degree at a University, Institute or College (University) or are within one year of graduation, but conducted the research while still enrolled at a University, having completed an aspect of thermal processing research.

Open to all members of the ASM Heat Treating Society (HTS), as well as interested heat treaters, the ASM-HTS General Membership Meeting presented the 2019 George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award, the 2019 HTS Surface Combustion Emerging Leader Award, and the 2019 HTS Bodycote Best Paper Award.
Mr. Daniel W. McCurdy, Bodycote, President, Automotive & General Industrial HT – North America & Asia, was selected by the HTS Board to receive the 2019 George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award. Established in 1996, this award recognizes distinguished and significant contributions to the field of heat treating through leadership, management, or engineering development of substantial commercial impact. Mr. McCurdy is being recognized “For leadership in the advancement of commercial heat treatment and metal join across North America and around the world.”
Mr. Trevor M. Jones, CEO, Solar Manufacturing Inc., was selected as the recipient of the 2019 ASM HTS/Surface Combustion Emerging Leader Award. Established in 2013, the award recognizes an outstanding early to mid-career heat treating professional whose accomplishments exhibit exceptional achievements in the heat treating industry. The award acknowledges an individual who sets the “highest standards” for HTS participation and inspires others to dedicate themselves to the advancement and promotion of vacuum and atmosphere heat treating technologies. The award is sponsored by Surface Combustion Inc. and includes a check for $4000. Mr. Trevor Jones is being recognized for “Trevor’s main focus centered largely on developing low pressure carburizing, vacuum purge gas nitriding processes, and the engineering required to ensure these essential processes were viable.”
Ms. Virginia K. Judge, Ph.D. Candidate, Colorado School of Mines, was selected on behalf of the Heat Treating Society Board, to receive the 2019 HTS/Bodycote Best Paper Award for her paper entitled: “Rapid Tempering: Opportunities and Challenges.” This award, established in 1997 by the ASM Heat Treating Society, recognizes a paper that represents advancement in heat treating technology, or promotes heat treating in some substantial way or represents a clear advancement in managing the business of heat treating. The award is sponsored by Bodycote Thermal Process-North America and consists of a recognition plaque and a check for $2500.
