The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Qatar of two Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) fire units and associate parts and equipment worth an estimated $6.5 billion, according to a DSCA statement.
In addition to the two THAAD fire units, Qatar requested 12 THAAD launchers, 150 THAAD interceptors, two THAAD fire control and communications, two AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars, one Early Warning radar (EWR) and associated parts, equipment and support.
The principal contractor in the proposed deal would be Lockheed Martin [LMT] with subcontractor Raytheon [RTN].
The deal is contingent on Congress’ approval.
The THAAD system, produced by Lockheed Martin, is the first weapon system with both endo- and exoatmospheric capability developed specifically to defend against ballistic missiles. The THAAD element provides upper-tier defense in the terminal phase segment of the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) integrated Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) (Defense Daily, Nov. 6).
