Raytheon [RTN] said recently it has acquired the robotics technologies and capabilities from Sarcos Inc., which does research and development in advanced robotics systems for industry and entertainment, medical devices, and mechanical and electrical microsystems.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sarcos, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has 56 employees. Its customers include DoD and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The company has developed mechanical systems with a “human level of dexterous control,” Sarcos says on its Web site.
“With Sarcos we are gaining world-renowned research and development capabilities in robotics technology, providing us with new capabilities to expand our position in this developing growth area,” Dan Smith, president of Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, said in a statement.
Separately, Raytheon said it is forming strategic alignments with five India-based companies to develop better technology for that country’s military forces. Raytheon has signed memorandums of understanding with Wipro Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co. Limited, and Data Patterns Private Limited. Earlier this year Raytheon formed a partnership with the Strategic Electronics Division of India’s Tata Power Co.
The six Indian companies manufacture technology and defense equipment for India’s military forces, including communications, radar, naval systems, telecommunications and broadcast, electronic warfare, tank electronics, opto-electronics, professional electronic components and solar photovoltaic systems.
