Canada awarded two contracts to Rheinmetall with a total base value of $108 million that could be worth as much as $381 million if all options are exercised, according to a company statement.

Rheinmetall is contracted to provide both the Medium Range Radar (MRR) system and the Integrated Soldier System (ISS) to the Canadian Armed Forces.

The MMR will allow the Canadian military “to determine the launch and impact points of enemy rockets, artillery and mortar rounds,” Rheinmetall said. It is also able to track hostile and friendly aircraft, fixed-wing and rotary; unmanned air vehicles; cruise missiles and anti-radiation missiles, the company said.

The MRR contract order lasts for three years, covering procurement of 10 MRR systems with their associated logistical support. It also covers in-service support with an extension option. This initial order phase is worth over $100 million but if all options are exercised it would be worth up to $188 million.

The MRR system is set to be supplied with cooperation with ELTA Systems Ltd., a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which is furnishing the ELM-2084 multi-mission radar. As the prime contractor, Rheinmetall is responsible for program management, systems integration, testing, and integrated logistic support.

The ISS is a modular soldier system “with state-of-the-art secure communications and navigation technology,” that improves individual situational awareness, Rheinmetall said. The ISS can also be integrated into the Canadian Land Command Support System, according to the company.

The ISS contract order lasts for four years. An initial qualification phase is worth over $5 million. If the Canadian government declares the system fully acceptable, it can exercise options for up to 4,144 systems and an additional second contract for related support. The total value of the contract with all options exercised is $193 million.

Rheinmetall will supply the ISS in cooperation with Saab AB. Rheinmetall is responsible for system development and integration, program management, and integrated logistics.
