Saab AB has developed a new version of the PS-05/A fighter radar, designated Mk4, to provide the Gripen C/D with improved performance and operating range, the company said on April 28.
The PS-05/A radar was originally developed for the Gripen fighter. The Mk4 model includes a new hardware configuration with a complete new radar back-end that provides improved radar performance and operational range, enhances the Gripen Weapon System capabilities, and offers full AMRAAM and Meteor integration, Saab said.
The Mk4 includes a new Air-to-Air mode, which has been implemented and demonstrated. This mode increases acquisition range with 100 percent at low altitudes compared to previous versions of the PS-05/A and can detect targets with a very low radar cross section, Saab said.
The Meteor missile downlink is optimized to maintain radar performance during long-range data linking scenarios.
“The Mk4 is a world-class multifunction radar, with excellent ECCM performance, growth capability and with very low life cycle cost,” Lars Tossman, the head of airborne surveillance systems at Saab’s electronic defence systems business area, said in a statement.
The company highlighted the Mk4 can be adapted to fit into most aircraft platforms for global usage. This includes multi-role combat aircraft, UAVs, and advanced jet trainers.
