Smiths Detection is expanding its production facility in Edgewood, Md., to accommodate full production of its JCAD Lightweight Chemical Detectors and introduce production of its multiview HI-SCAN 6040 aTiX Advanced Technology X-Ray system that is currently built in Germany. The Edgewood facility currently does final packaging of the JCAD detectors. By producing the HI-SCAN 6040 aTiX in the U.S., Smiths will be able to respond faster to customer demand in this country for the machines, which are used by the Transportation Security Administration to screen carry-on bags at airport checkpoints. Smiths says the Edgewood facility has grown from 87,000 to 145,000 square feet the last two years and the workforce has increased by more than 40 percent in that period. “While continuing as a center of excellence for chemical and biological detection, Edgewood will now take on the same role for advanced X-Ray systems that are protecting people, airports and critical infrastructures worldwide,” says Tim Picciotti, vice president, Military & Emergency Responders for Smiths Detection.
