The State Department on Tuesday said it has approved a potential $138 million foreign military sales (FMS) to Ukraine for the sustainment and related logistics support of the HAWK Phase III ground-based air defense missiles.

RTX [RTX], which is the prime contractor for the HAWK, and PROJECTXYZ, a minority woman-owned small business based in Huntsville, Ala., are the principal contractors on the deal.

Equipment under the FMS award will be supplied from existing U.S. Army stocks, country donations, commercial off-the-shelf, and new production, the State Department said. HAWK provides all-weather low to medium-altitude air defense.

“Ukraine has an urgent need to increase its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and the aerial capabilities of Russian forces,” the State Department said. “Maintaining and sustaining the HAWK missile system will enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its people and protect critical national infrastructure.”

The proposed sale includes engineering and integration for communications and interoperability, refurbishment and overhaul of HAWK fire units, missile recertification components, test and support equipment, spares, and training.
