Smiths Detection Deploys Smart Security Checkpoint at Japan Airport

Smiths Detection is deploying what it says is the first ever Smart Security Checkpoint at Kansai Airport in Japan. The checkpoint is an integrated system that combines walk-through metal detectors with passenger security scanners, cabin baggage X-Ray machines, an automated tray return system, and an advanced image and checkpoint management platform to provide a more efficient and less intrusive experience for passengers. The configuration includes Smiths’ HI-SCAN 6040-2is X-Ray scanner that has automatic explosives detection capability. The company says the deployment will significantly reduce waiting times at the security checkpoint.

ARA Introduces Unattended Ground Sensor System

Applied Research Associates (ARA) has introduced the Pathfinder unattended ground sensor system, which is aimed at improving Border Patrol agent efficiency and protection, lowering costs, and preventing compromise of a border wall. The expendable Pathfinder is already in use with the U.S. military for border security, counter-terrorism, and counter-drug operations globally. ARA says that Pathfinder sensors can be dispersed or distributed irregularly throughout border areas and terrain to provide agents unique insight into immigration, terrorism, and drug related movement corridors, patterns and activities. Some of the key product attributes include battery life of six to 24 months depending on the kind of sensor, focused detection radii and point detection capability, long-range detection reporting without the use of gateways and relays, and intelligent, machine learning algorithms.

Smiths’ IONSCAN 600 Receives CAAC Approval

Smiths Detection says its IONSCAN 600 explosives and narcotics trace detector has been approved for explosives trace detection as part of the passenger and baggage screening process within the Chinese airports by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The IONSCAN 600 also meets Europe’s standards for cargo and passenger screening.
