Smiths Detection Checkpoint X-Ray System Recieves ECAC Certification for LEDS
Smiths Detection says its advanced HI-SCAN 6040-2is HR dual-view X-Ray inspection system has obtained Standard 3 Type C, which is an extended approval as a liquid explosive detection system (LEDS) under the requirements of the European Civil Aviation Conference. The system provides automatic detection of LEDS. As a Standard 3 machine, the HI-SCAN 6040-2is features higher detection capabilities to enhance the level of security at checkpoints. The company says 6040-2is is the first dual-view X-Ray system to achieve the Standard Type C.
DHS Breaks Ground on New Explosives Detection Lab
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate on a new explosives detection laboratory at its Transporation Security Laboratory in Atlantic City, N.J. The new Independent Test & Evaluation Certification Laboratory building will provide about 13,500 square feet of extra reinforced laboratory space for conducting tests of explosives detection systems. The TSL is used by DHS to test screening systems that are used to scan carry-on and checked baggage at airports for explosives. The 12-acre secure campus includes specialized explosive storage and handling areas and multi-laboratory infrastructure designed for test and evaluation of technology for explosives and contraband detection and blast mitigation. The new facility will include four hardened laboratory cells for testing with live explosives, including cells for assembling improvised and homemade explosive devices, conducting trace explosives contamination studies, as well as office and training spaces.
