Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), chair of the House Appropriations Committee, announced on Wednesday she won’t seek reelection in 2024.
Granger has been the House’s top appropriator since January 2023, after serving four years as the committee’s ranking member.
“As I announce my decision to not seek re-election, I am encouraged by the next generation of leaders in my district. It’s time for the next generation to step up and take the mantle and be a strong and fierce representative for the people,” Granger said in her statement. “Although I am not running for re-election, I plan to serve out the remainder of my term and work with our new speaker and my colleagues to advance our conservative agenda and finish the job I was elected to do.”
Granger, who has represented Texas’ 12th district since 1997, also previously served as the chair of HAC’s defense subcommittee, becoming the first woman to take on the role.
Her Fort Worth, Texas district is home to Lockheed Martin’s [LMT] F-35 manufacturing plant and its where Bell [TXT] builds the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
“As the committee responsible for federal funding, it’s our responsibility to reduce spending where we can and ensure that we prioritize resources on national security. As the former chair of the defense subcommittee and as someone who has thousands of service members and hundreds of defense contractors in my district, I know how important it is that we have a strong defense,” Granger has said previously.
