Elkhart, Ind.-based Transhield Inc. Nov. 1 said the company was awarded an $8.3 million contract–the largest defense contract in company history to supply protective covers for more than 4,500 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles in the Army fleet as well as covers for 217 Navy MRAPs, Marine Corps Light Armored Vehicles (LAVs), M777 Howitzers and other critical items.
The Marine Corps Systems Command awarded the contract. The Marines, which have been using Transhield vehicle covers to protect their fleet of MRAP vehicles, worked closely with representatives from the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) and Letterkenny Army Depot to develop this corrosion-prevention solution for vehicles returning from deployment or recently refurbished

As a result of this contract, Transhield’s protective covers, featuring patented corrosion reduction technology, will be used to protect more than half of the Army’s current fleet of MRAP vehicles, including Navistar Defense’s MaxxPro, the Oshkosh Defense [OSK] M-ATV and BAE Systems’ RG-31 variants.
The USMC Corrosion Prevention and Control Office, which is a leader in the U.S. military’s efforts to maintain its fleet of vehicles and equipment through the reduction of corrosion, will administer the contract.
“We are so pleased to be expanding the use of our protective covers to the U.S. Army’s
MRAP fleet, as well as U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy equipment,” said James Glick,
Transhield’s president. “This is the largest contract ever awarded for advanced protective covers, and we are honored by the U.S. military’s recognition of the unique corrosion protection benefits of in our cover technology.”
Transhield vehicle covers provide anti-corrosive properties to help extend the life and ensure readiness of military vehicles while in storage, on base or awaiting redeployment. This order is part of the ongoing effort to reduce damage caused by corrosion and environmental degradation.
Transhield custom-fit covers offer the lightweight and ease-of-use found in earlier vinyl and tarp covers combined with the durability, breathability and corrosion reduction of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor. These covers offer protection against environmental factors including corrosion, dust,
wind, rain, snow and UV rays. They are available to protect a broad range of military vehicles and equipment, ranging from generators to the M1A1 tank, tactical wheeled vehicles and amphibious assault vehicles.
