The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued Requests for Information (RFIs) related to Enhanced Metal Detector (EMD) systems and Shoe Scanner Detection (SSD) systems for the screening of airline passengers. TSA wants information on market-ready EMDs that provide detection of prohibited metal objects but may also provide additional detection of prohibited non-metallic objects. The preliminary goal for the SSD is a system capable of detecting threat objects that might be concealed in any type of footwear without requiring passengers to remove their shoes.
