The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a shoe scanning device (SSD) capable of detecting threat objects concealed in footwear without requiring passengers to remove their footwear as they pass through a security checkpoint. These threat objects include a variety of military, commercial and homemade explosives or explosives devices. Some of the high level goals of the SSD program include achieving the current level of screening capabilities provided by the current Advanced Technology-2 X-Ray machines used to screen carry-on bags, performing screening without increasing Transportation Security Officer staffing levels and increase overall operational throughput.
