The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reopened the solicitation process for its Credential Authentication Technology and Boarding Pass Scanning Device (CAT/BPSS) that will be used at the nation’s airports. TSA plans to award a single contract for about 50 of the devices with an option to buy up to 2,325. Recovery Act funds will be used for the program. The agency plans to host an Industry Day to answer questions about the program. The automated system is intended to help Transportation Security Officers locate fraudulent IDs, validate the issuing authority and authenticity of boarding passes and measure passenger wait times at security checkpoints. TSA plans to issue a Request for Proposals after it reviews responses to the current pre-solicitation notice. The agency plans two rounds of Qualification Test and Evaluation with successful vendors advancing to an Operational Test and Evaluation phase. The types of documents the CAT/BPSS device will screen include U.S. Passports, Passport Cards and Visas, U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, photo ID issued by state Department of Motor Vehicles, Permanent Resident Card or Resident Alien Card, and International Civil Aviation Organization Standard passports.
