OSI Systems‘ [OSIS] Rapiscan division has received a $20 million order from Britain’s Manchester Airport Group to provide multiple units of its Real Time Tomography (RTT) Explosives Detection Systems (EDS). The order is the first for the RTT units and also the first for any type of fixed-gantry EDS. Rapiscan has been working with the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to get the RTT EDS system certified to screen checked baggage at U.S. airports. In the U.K. the RTT systems will be used to automatically inspect checked baggage for explosives and other threats. OSI says the system can process up to 1,800 bags per hour. “Our next-generation computed tomography (CT) system, the RTT, allows airports to upgrade their baggage inspection infrastructure, with minimal modifications, to meet higher standards of screening required in the European Union (EU) without sacrificing the operational throughput required by airports,” says Ajay Mehra, president of Rapiscan Systems. “The unique mix of CT detection performance and high throughput positions the RTT in a class by itself, and makes it the first system that truly bridges the gap between EU and U.S. requirements.” Rapiscan first trialed the RTT at Manchester Airport in 2009. OSI says that it expects the system to reduce operational and services costs versus traditional rotating gantry CT systems that are currently deployed at airports.
